We rented a car to free our wings for a bit. Doodletown is an hour out of New York City by the Hudson River. It is a steep walk on dirt paths past old foundations of a hamlet.

The first set is flora and landscapes and the second is avian. The highlight of the day was the nesting Redstart. The indigo bunting was one quick shot from the back.

My first trip to Central Park this Spring was this morning. We saw warblers and other migrants.

Jamaica Bay

I went to Jamaica Bay NWR in Brooklyn with two dear friends yesterday. There were quite a few winter ducks. I enjoyed the Brant and Snow Geese. A special one was the Long Tailed Duck at Sheepshead Bay. The best one for me was the Long-tailed Grackle who serenaded us. As part of its song it did a wing slap. I learned something new. It was real treat to get out and bird.

Two rarities were a partially leucistic Grackle and a young Red-headed Woodpecker.

I love moss and Lichen. There was plenty there to photograph. Autumn leaves and rushing streams too. I was luck to catch a kinglet with a large grub. I didn’t have me long lens so missed photographing the others I saw.

Abingdon Rail

Yesterday afternoon on the way home Marc noticed a Tweet announcing a Virginia Rail at Abingdon Square Park, which is a rare occurrence for a very small park. It was a life bird for me. There was about a dozen other birders there, most of whom I know. We had cameras and binoculars, which amused the locals. The Virginia Rail seemed quite comfortable. It was feeding on dozens of worms and dodging around the legs of the people sitting on the benches.
