Shawangunk and Liberty Loop

We went on another lovely field trip with Linnaean NY. Saw and heard lots of grassland birds at Shawangunk Grassland NWR in Ulster County, New York. and at the Liberty Loop Trail part of the Wallkill River NWR in NY/New Jersey. The highlight for me were the Sandhill Cranes, including a baby one. They were life-birds for me. I enjoyed the company of fellow birders, many of whom I have known for years. It was very hot out in the grasslands – 90 degrees! Ice-cream on the way home helped a little. The baby Sandhill Crane is in the grass in the first two pictures.

Doodletown

We went on a terrific field trip to Doodletown on Saturday. We saw many wonderful birds spotted by a sharp group of birders. Marc found a Five-lined Skink. I spotted the Worm-eating warbler. Everyone contributed sightings. The American Wisteria was blooming allover the place. It was a glorious day.

The full birds report will eventually be posted on the Linnaean NY website Field Trip Reports page.
I didn’t bring really long lens, consequently, the bird images are very grainy.

Marine Nature Study Area

The Marine Nature Nature Study Area in Hempstead, Nassau County, Long Island by the Long Island Sound. It is a nice little sanctuary with boardwalks out into the marsh. My prize of the day was the clapper rail briefly seen as it ran from one cover to the next. I haven’t seen one for decades. Terns are fun to watch and hard to photograph. I made two composites of one diving. We also enjoyed watching a yellow-crowned Night Heron pulling things out of the mud.

Central Park

I saw more warblers than I photographed. It was a fair day for migrating birds in Central Park. The last 3 photos of the Catbird tells a story, “My Ant!” Maybe it didn’t taste good.

NYBG Trees and Nature

We took two friends with us to the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx on Thursday, May 6. It was a glorious spring day. We covered the entire garden. After the garden we ate an Italian meal near Arthur Avenue. There are enough pictures to spread over 4 days.
