Ice in Central Park

On Saturday the temperatures were brutally cold in NYC but there were a few patches of open water in The Lake in Central Park where lots of Canada Geese and a few Northern Shovelers were crowded together.

Today (February 2) we are in the midst of a blizzard. It’s to rough to go out in it. Maybe I’ll get to go to the park before it melts later in the week between appointments.

The first picture has an ice formation that looks like a bird.

Hudson River Park

Hudson River Park at sunset. I was testing how much light and noise is created when using my my new 2x teleconverter for the Nikkor Z 70-200mm f /2.8 VR S lens on my Nikon Z7. This 2x teleconverter gives the lens a 100% boost (effectively giving me a 140-400mm f/5.6 – loosing ~2 stops of light). I think the results of these photos taken in low light after noise reduction in post are acceptable. Once a long time ago I tried a 2x teleconverter on an f/5.6 lens it lost so much light the images were too grainy to use.

Moody Jamaica Bay

On Januray 9th we went to Jamaica Bay very briefly. It was very cold and windy and I didn’t see many birds. I was feeling a bit moody and these images reflect that (click to view gallery).

Cold Spring

After digging out the car we drove to The Riverview Restaurant on Fair Street, off Main Street in Cold Spring, New York, and had a lovely lunch while overlooking the Hudson. Next we drove to have a quick look at Foundry Dock Park. Our final stop was an attempt to find the waterfall at Indian Brook Falls but I could not find the trail head in the snow. I’ll try again in the Spring. (check out the links)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

West Point Foundry Preserve

There are ruins and a few buildings left over form when the foundry was active. I was hoping for a waterfall but didn’t find it. Here’s a link to some of its history. Sometime I would like to visit the Putnam Museum.

Foundry Brook

We drove up to Cold Springs, New York on Saturday. Marc was concerned about the possibility of ice on the roads. The roads were clear but the parking lot at Foundry Brook was not. We got stuck. Luckily a kind couple helped dig out the car. I had never been to West Point Foundry Brook Preserve (location and about) before. It was lovely in the snow. More to come…

Snow in Greenwich Village

Some pictures I made during the snow storm. New York City had 10.5 inches. Note the snow cushions. Outdoor dining is not on.
