Renwick Smallpox Hospital

The Renwick Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island was built in 1856 from designs by James Renwick, Jr. It is the only landmarked ruin in New York City. Being a ruin is what gives it an air of mystery and charm.

Queensboro Bridge

The Queensboro Bridge, built in 1909, was the first bridge linking Queens to Manhattan. It was designed by engineer Gustav Lindenthal and architect Henry Hornbostel. An interesting tidbit is Simon and Garfunkle’s 1966 song “59th Street Bridge (Feelin’ Groovy)“. Read more about that and the bridge at Beyond the Village and Back: The Queensboro Bridge – Village Preservation.

Roosevelt Island

This is the first of a half dozen posts of photographs made during a trip to Roosevelt Island in the East River on February 17th 2022. The two mile long island is part of the borough of Manhattan, New York. The island was called Minnehanonck by the Lenape and Varkens Eylandt (Hog Island) by New Netherlanders (source: Roosevelt Island – Wikipedia). The trip was sponsored by Sierra Photo NYC. Some of these have augmented skies.

Boquete 4 Ways

I revised a picture of the hills of Boquete, Panama photographed in the early morning on May 18, 2014 after receiving an excellent critique by Blake Rudis f.64 Elite (f64elite.com) or f64 Academy (Blake also has a YouTube channel: f64 Academy – YouTube). I really like his courses and tools. I have learned a lot from him. I started taking his classes during the pandemic. I will let you decide which image works best of these 4. One of these is not a good composition.

CP Snowy Landscapes

I photographed these landscapes during the Sierra Photo NYC walk on January 8th 2022. I added skies to the last four to enhance the scenes.

Horatio and Abingdon Snow

Our first snowfall of this winter in NYC was on January 7, 2022. I was excited to go out and photograph it. I antiqued the first one (we live in that building on the corner) and selectively altered saturation in the others. I toned down the color the strong color of the buildings to put the focus on the snow. Only two are straight B&W.

Panama Skies

I did sky replacements for blown out white banded skies in these two images using Luminar AI and Photoshop. It is good to be careful to use skies that matches the lighting.

Two photographs from our trip to Bouquete, Panama in 2014.

Nature Wins

One of my favorite photographs made in 2011 by the Hudson River in Manhattan. Left alone nature will take over. On the left is before processing an don the right after I warmed it up.
