Lower Bay Birds

To wrap up my posts of the American Princes pelagic boat trip here are a few more birds. At the end of the trip, the boat hit a sand bar at the entrance to Sheepshead Bay. This happened because of a very low tide. After freeing the boat, the captain took us to see more birds while waiting for the tide to come in. I apologize for the poor quality of the horned grebe photo but it is all I have.

Gannets

The highlight of the pelagic boat trip on the American Princess were the gannets. There were more gannets than I have ever seen in one place in my life. They were tightly packed over a school of fish. The diving took place at the edge of the group of gannets. It was like watching a machine gun firing into the water as one bird dove in rapidly after another. It is amazing how they turned themselves into little torpedoes as they entered the water.

Harbor Seals

One of the Islands in the Lower Bay is home to some harbor seals. Here is a list of Marine Mammals Of New York – NYSDEC.

Lower Bay

We sailed out of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, into the Lower New York Bay. There are several little islands there full of bird life.
