The highlight of the pelagic boat trip on the American Princess were the gannets. There were more gannets than I have ever seen in one place in my life. They were tightly packed over a school of fish. The diving took place at the edge of the group of gannets. It was like watching a machine gun firing into the water as one bird dove in rapidly after another. It is amazing how they turned themselves into little torpedoes as they entered the water.

Great set of images
Thanks Steve. It was a wonderful show.
Delightful pictures and excellent prose description – especially the machine gun image
Thanks Derrick. You are a much better writer than I am.
🙂 You set the balance with photography
Their body shape is like a torpedo!
That is true. 🙂
I just learned something. From afar, I’d have thought these were all sea gulls, but with your help I see and admire the different coloring of the gannets. Thanks, Sherry,
I’m happy to introduce you to a species of bird. There is so much to learn. It never stops.
