Montauk 1 of 3

On the weekend starting on January 18, 2024 we want on a trip with the Littoral Society led by Don Riepe to Montauk. Long Island, New York. The weather was freezing. I arrived there with a cold which I am still recovering from. The cold (illness and temperature) dampened my enthusiasm so I didn’t take many photographs. Many of the photos in this post and the following are by my husband, Marc (signed Felix).

I loved the Montauk Manor – Montauk Hotel. Our room was full of nautical tchotchkes. I’ll spare you from the over 30 photos of them. When we arrived on Friday it was snowing a little. Our group went for a short trip to Montauk inlet by Montauk Lake.

Gorgeous photos, Sherry. Montauk is such a wonderful place. The Inn looks like a great place to staye.

The Inn is fabulous. Well worth a visit. We drove about 300 miles on the trip.

Fantastic! What a great adventure to Montauk you and Marc had, Sherry. The Inn, the nautical tchotchkes, overview of the Inn, hearty birders, lighthouse, all so lovely. But my oh my those long-tailed ducks. How incredible to see that species! I heard myself gasp when I saw the first photo of the ducks. I think even I, who really does not like exploring places in this kind of frigid weather, would do it to see long-tailed ducks. Hurray!

The ducks made it worth it. The people and hotel were lovely too. Thanks Jet.

A fine array of pictures looking very cold until you get inside the inn

Those long-tailed ducks surely did catch my eye! I’d never heard of them; they’re quite distinctive. And I loved seeing “tchotchkes” in your text. That’s one of my favorite words, but I rarely come across it now.

LOL Long-tails used to be called Oldsquaw. Not a politically correct name. I had to look up how to spell tchotchkes. Probably from Yiddish or Slavic. There is a large Jewish population in New York.

Personally, I’d be just as happy with Oldsquaw, especially since I grew up with a Native American friend in Iowa who called her grandmother that.

That is how it is these days. Offensive racist names are being changed all over. Audubon wants to change its name.

Th Montauk Inn looks a great place, and what a fabulous location. The long tailed ducks look very cute 🙂

It was worth the trip to see the long-tailed ducks.
