Central Park Mid September

Cloud cover made it dark. This is why the photographs are grainy and not well lit. I also saw a Veery and had a quick glimpse of a Ruby-throated humming bird. And I briefly heard a Wood thrush.

“There is a a singer everyone has heard/Loud, a mid-summer and a mid-wood bird,/Who makes the solid tree trunk sound again.” Robert Frost is describing “The Oven Bird” and what follows is a a description of the bird in summer, who knows that all the seasons, including fall, matter, but unlike the speaker, it knows what to make of “a diminished thing.” A beloved seventh grade teacher had the class write about a “diminished thing,” and I still remember what I wrote a very long time ago.

Here’s to autumn, Sherry. I look forward to more of your glorious pictures.
