On our first trip to Hosmer Grove in Haleakala NP to look for endemic birds. It was rainy, foggy and freezing cold. I did see one bird – the Iʻiwi or scarlet honeycreeper (Drepanis coccinea). See ʻIʻiwi – Wikipedia and also see ʻIʻiwi – American Bird Conservancy (abcbirds.org). It feeds on the endangered Metrosideros polymorpha – Wikipedia. These photographs aren’t clear because of the weather.

What cool birds! Lucky you for seeing them. I wrote a short story with honeycreepers but have never seen one in person.
Love to see your short story on honey creepers. It was really something how the bright red to shone through the fog.
The scarlet honeycreeper is so pretty.
It is a pity the I’iwi is almost out of places to live.
‘Honeycreeper’ is such a perfect name. And there’s another rainbow!
I agree. Looking down on a rainbow was a new experience. 🙂
Lovely, cheerful pictures.
Thanks Anne
I am curious about the relationship between the last 2 photos of the highway and the rainbow. Were they taken at pretty much the same time of day? Is the rainbow pretty much opposite the highway photo or “next door” to it?
Same time and place one to the left onto the right. 🙂
The honeycreeper nicely picked out
I managed to reduce the fog a bit in the photos. 🙂
