Sandy Hook

We went on a botanical walk during the annual Littoral Society (littoralsociety.org) picnic at Sandy Hook, part of Gateway National Recreation Area.

I learned how a little window on the seed pod opens on the Clasping Venus’ Looking-glass (Triodanis perfoliata) and the seeds tumble out.

The photo just below the prickly pear shows a plantain: perhaps Woolly Plantain (Plantago patagonica). Plantains are in the Acanthus family, and aren’t a grass, despite their love of popping up in lawns! Venus’s Looking Glass is one of my favorite flowers. I never see many at a time, but they’re fairly widely distributed here.
