Earlier this week we went to the beach. First we went to Jones Beach on Long Island, New York, to enjoy the sun and water. It was a perfect day – not too hot with a lovely ocean breeze. Then we went to to Captree State Park where we barbequed chicken, hotdogs, and corn on the cob. We also ate potato salad, vichyssoise, watermelon, and honeydew. There were lots of people at Jones Beach but almost none at Captree. We got to use our lovely new 7 foot beach umbrella (amazon.com).

I grew up on Long Island. My parents eventually moved to South Florida (natch), but not too long before they left, I was visiting and we decided to go to Captree. The weather turned overcast, but we stayed until we were attacked by the seabirds. We had no open packages of food. They were diving at us. My mother laughed at my father and me, who were both terrified. My father had the keys. We hightailed it out of there.
Captree is lovely and, yes, usually pretty empty, especially on a day like today.

No seabirds dove on us. We had our food covered. Maybe it was nesting season when you were there. 🫤
I see you were in my neck of the woods Sherry. My wife and I live about 15 minutes from Captree State Park. Normally it’s not too crowded at Captree. Most people go to Robert Moses State Park which is over the second bridge because they like the Atlantic Ocean surf. My wife and I usually throw some beach chairs in the car and hang out at Captree because it’s not crowded and if you are barbecuing its a better option than Robert Moses.
I agree. Captree is a great place to sit quietly and cook out. It is not too long drive from Manhattan either.
