During my search for winter ducks in Oyster Bay, Long Island, we stopped at Hampstead Harbor Shoreline Park with its desolate derelict piers. We parked at a little memorial to sandminers on West Shore Road: History of Sandmining in Port Washington: Sandminers Monument Inc.

In your 3rd photo, on my first glance it appeared to me as though you had perhaps photographed 2 animal like weird creatures – in the foreground the gold colored ? piece of wood and in the background a dark object! 🙂

The history of sandmining was interesting. It reminded me of the use of sand to raise Galveston Island after the storm of 1900. One of the favorite anchorages on the island was created when sand was dredged from the spot and used to fill under buildings that had been raised .
It is fascinating to know how much of Long Island was used to build Manhattan. Sandcastles built by man.
