Our darling bird, Dinka died suddenly and without warning on Friday March 11, 2022. He was a 20-year-old Timneh Grey. Dinka was named after the Dinka people – Wikipedia in Africa. I indigenous people and the sound of the name. Dinka could have lived to be 40 to 70 years old.
I am trying my best to grapple with my grief and posting this was difficult. Pets become close family members. I am sure you can empathize with our loss. We buried him on the same day. I created two composite images to show where he is now.

Im sorry for your loss. He was surely a pleasant looking little angle. As an animal lover, I can only imagine your pain.
Thank you very much. We miss him terribly.
So sorry Sherry. Our pets are family and we feel their passing. May his memory bring you warmth and joy.
Thank you so much Anne. I still shed tears thinking about him.
Oh Sherry, I am so sorry for your loss. What a handsome guy who sounds like he was a real joy in your life. I am sure you have lots of wonderful photos and memories. So sad.
Thank you for your condolences.
I read your vocabulary post first, and realised it must be a tribute – so I repeat my commiserations here.
Thank you. Sharing this helps me deal with my grief.
Fully understood
What a lovely looking bird, so characterful. I can empathise with your sad loss.
Thank you so much.
My deepest sympathy.
Thanks Larry 😢
I am so sorry for the loos of your beloved Dinka. She looks wise and wonderful!
He was indeed a very smart and loving little creature. Thank you.
When my beloved cat died at eighteen, it was equally sudden and unexpected; within four hours she was gone. I suspect you’re experiencing the same sense of grief combined with shock that I did. He was an exceptionally handsome bird, and I’m sure you have a wealth of memories after so many years. I’m really sorry, but I certainly am looking forward to whatever you might want to share about his life.
It took about a week to sink in. I had trouble facing it. Every day is so empty without him. I have lost other pets but none like this one who was more of a person than a pet. Thank you.
Awwwwwww! So sweet!
I am very sorry for your loss Sherry. I know how much pets mean.
Thanks Dan. I know you understand being a pet owner yourself.
He was a lovely looking bird. I’m very sorry for the loss of your dear pet.
Thank you, Belinda, for your kind words.
Dinka will be missed I’m sure but the love you have for him will never pass Sherry and that is important!
Thank you. This means a lot to me.
He will always be close by I’m sure and will also be waiting for you by the bridge.
I was impressed by his vocabulary Sherry!
How did you come by his name?
Thank you. His African ancestry led me to the name Dinka people – Wikipedia Dinka https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinka_people?msclkid=0514c37ea6bc11ec9d1f752e5c1d1e28 I like indigenous people and the sound of the name.
I’m so sorry to read this Sherry. Pets become much loved family members and losing them is hard to deal with, especially when they have been with you for many years. Dinka looked lovely and I guess he was quite a character xx
He was a personality. I will miss the little “person” he was.
Dear Sherry –
I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I know this is incredibly difficult for you and Mark and for all of us who were able to see, experience, and remember this remarkable life force.
I consider myself very lucky to have seen Dinka a few times at your place and then to have been able to host him in my own space, briefly.
He was the best companion.
Sending much love your direction.
Oh Carl. Thank you so much for your sympathy. My love to you too.
Hi Sherry, I am so so sorry to receive this very sad news. I know how truly special Dinka was and how close you and Mark were to this unique and captivating member of your family. My heart goes out to you as you have to face this hard loss. My Love Linda
Thank you so much for your caring words. It means a lot to me. I know as a pet owner you understand how deeply I feel the loss.
So sorry to hear this… altough he was your compagnion for 20 years, it’s always hard to say goodbey. Thanks for sharing the pictures of Dinka. My condolences.
I did not click “Like” because there is nothing to like about losing a family pet. I’m so sorry for your loss.
I will accept a “likes'” as an acknowledgement. Thank you for caring.
Sorry you lost this treasured pet, Sherry. I have heard that African greys have the largest vocabulary of any parrot. I see in your comments you plan to share some of the things he said. Looking forward to reading them!
Thanks. He was a treasure. He understood what he was saying and used his words at the right times.
I’m sorry to hear of your loss. Losing pets is very difficult.
Especially so after 20 years.
I am sorry to hear this sad news Sherry. You have some beautiful pictures and memories.
Thank you. There are so many things to remember from his too short but long life. Eventually I will post some of his vocabulary – which was often funny.
