Paris in 1967

I created this old sketch in 1967. It depicts my little garret room in 10 Rue Bremontier, 17th arrondissement, Paris. It was the view from my own little room across the courtyard from my parents apartment. I loved that room. It had a wrought iron balcony and french doors. The view of the clay chimney pots was charming. I was there for 6 months. I left my family to come back to New York to be with Marc. My husband for 56 years and counting.

A watercolor sketch depicting the rooftops of Paris, with a view of chimneys and rooftops adorned with orange details against a light sky. The text 'sort of what my view is' is handwritten at the top.

It’s so charming. Now, under the roof, it’s cold in winter and hot in summer, like it is at the moment with the current heatwave. I also spent time in those servants’ rooms, and the view was so much better than in the main apartment.

It is lovely to meet someone who knows about those little attic rooms. I had a little hotplate for tea. There was a communal toilet in the hall which had a bottle of scent. For bathing I used my parent’s apartment.
