I photographed this Horned Owl in Central Park on November 24, 2015. There was lots of people and construction going on. The owl was unfazed. It groomed and slept like it was deep in the woods all alone. It is amazing how well some wildlife has adapted.

Parks in cities are a haven of eco-niche’s for birds. What an extraordinary sighting and what a bird! Love it that there in the midst of the mad hurly-burly and densely populated Manhattan is Central Park and it’s incredible bird life.
I am very lucky.
Thank you Dune. I should have added construction noises and people. I think they owl would prefer only the wind in the trees. the construction nearby probably uncovered some rats nests for the owl.
what great shots- and I love the sound effects!!
so beautiful! Owls are so adorable!
Thank you. And thanks for following.
lovely shots. sometimes I think owls just don’t give a hoot about what happens around them, and other times, they just seem so surprised. 🙂
Thanks you. I agree. Owls are unique in that their eyes are on the front of their skulls, I believe this makes them appear to have human expressions.
Beautiful photos :-). GH owls remind me of cats. I’m amazed by the variety of birds you see in Central Park.
He is adorable! Where were you when you took this?
If you go to the park you might find a birder looking at it. Most birders feel it is not good to post exact locations of rare birds publically.
Gorgeous autumnal series of an amazing find, Sherry! GH owls are such a treat to find anywhere, but that you found it in Central Park surrounded by high activity just says so much. Happy Thanksgiving to you, and thank you for all of the lovely photographs you share. 😀
Thanks Jet. We have a group of top birders in NYC that find these things. A few days ago there was a Western Flycatcher. Poor little mite was a bit off course. It was last seen eating flies by the rubbish bins at the boat house.
Beautiful…there is an owl that occasionally perches on the house next door. I have tried to photograph it, but no success.
Keep trying and you will succeed and use a long lens 🙂
I’ll ask Santa for one. : )
Just beautiful , Sherry 💥
Wow!💥
