Statement

I create photographic art, building on my history as a fine artist, and my love of science and nature. I aim to tell a story and set a mood in my work. When I see something beautiful or unusual in nature, I want to capture it. I aim to share the feeling it gives me. Occasionally dreams or memories inspire me; mostly it is something I see. My work is inspired by nature in New York City and my travels.

I use my artistic talent and skills with digital brushes to construct my images. I combine these with other “darkroom” techniques. This helps create a mood in my compositions and purposefully leads the eye into the image. To do this I use multiple “dark room”: techniques; like blurs, changes in tones, and colors. On occasion I compile several photographs as layers in Photoshop. I use muted shades with touches of color. This reminds me of my mother. She began her career hand tinting black and white photographs in Perth, Western Australia in the early 1940’s. My mother was a talented artist who did magazine illustrations in United States and murals in night clubs in London.

My evolution as an artist, from child to adult, went from drawing, to painting, and now to photography. For my early training in art I went to the Art Students League in NYC and art school in London. My mentor was Bill Skilling, a graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art. He taught me all he knew on every technique and style of painting. I learned composition and color theory. We worked together to create fine art and commercial art in NYC in the 1970’s. Most of my work was on canvas then and sold to clients and galleries in NYC. I transitioned from painting to creating photographic art in 1998.

I make art because I must—it is a part of me.
