Wai’anapanapa State Park

Midway along the loop road to Hana we stopped at Division of State Parks | Waiʻānapanapa State Park (hawaii.gov). We purchased tickets in advance. The highlight there were the Brown Noddies. The Hawaiian cemetery there is private.

I was looked at other tours on YouTube. Most people only go to the beaches. There are so many beaches, many are almost empty. I found the gardens and other places mostly empty too. Very serene.

I couldn’t believe it when I found two ‘friends’ here. The flower immediately under the snail has to be some variety of Crinum lily; we also have those in Texas. And just after that, the yellow flower with the very odd seed pods has to be a species closely related to our native canna. Those seed pods are memorable! If they weren’t shaped just a little differently from ours, I might think it was the same species.

I bet that it is a canna. There are many imported plants as well as wildlife in the Hawiian Islands, much to the detriment of the local flora and fauna. Unless labeled, I wouldn’t know which is which. In the book “Hawaii” Mitchner tells how the Polynesians imported their favorite flowers.
