Shinnecock

There is a Native American reservation out at the end of Long Island, New York in Suffolk County. We passed by the controversial billboard tribe put up for profit State Seeks to Stop Work on Second Shinnecock Billboard | The East Hampton Star. We went to Southampton Cemetery to buy grave plots for our green burials. It a good idea to plan ahead. I filled out the book “I’m Dead. So Now What” (catchy tile) so our next of kin or will know what to do when the time comes. Now that is done I can forget about it.

After a lovely seafood lunch at the Canal Cafe (thecanalcafe.com) we went to look for snowy owls. The caretaker, Eric, is a birder too and told us about the owls. I spotted 2 way off in the dunes. There was a women trespassing onto the dunes. Very bad behavior. After that I spotted another one a little closer to us on the crest of a dune along Shore Road.

They are such gorgeous birds! I saw one at a beach at Point Roberts, Washington – an odd piece of the U.S. you have to go through Canada to get to.

Somehow I suspect that if I went to our dunes I wouldn’t see a snowy owl! I do enjoy photos of them. The farthest south a friend has photographed them was southern Kansas.

I looked at the Shinnecock billboards, and I must say, they’re in quite good taste, and not as obtrusive as I thought they might be. It’s an interesting conflict.

Beaches in winter, even without owls, are interesting places to visit. 🙂

That’s a noce photo of the owl. I still haven’t managed to see one in nature. Good job.

Thanks Dan. It isn’t that hard to find them. Go to a seashore in winter that has sand dunes and look for birders looking at something — white bits in the dunes. I know you won’t do what one woman did while I was there and walk into the dunes which are off limits. You don’t need a super zoom camera lens either.

I generally obey the signs. I might look around for an interesting place to visit. I rarely go to the shore, but I do enjoy it in winter.

Great shots of the snow owl. How sad to read about people whitout respect for the rules….

Sigh, there are always a few selfish people. I would like action shots but was not about to spook the owl.
