Shawangunk Bluebirds

At the Shawangunk Grasslands NWR feeders there were lots of electric blue Eastern bluebirds. They are so lovely. It is the New York State bird. It is pictured on my conservation license plate. Part of the money to buy it went towards conservation.

I came back as I need a way to keep grackles and other birds out of the suet and other treats for my song birds. Is that some kind of feeder that keeps other birds out?

We are having a comeback of the Bluebirds around my neck of the woods in the Midwest – a lot of that as a result of local efforts to put up houses in a number of our wildlife areas – constant battle with the Wrens for who gets the house but usually plenty to go around. Thanks for sharing.

What marvelous photos, Sherry!! I love bluebirds! Is the license plate a new option? I left NYS 8 years ago and don’t recall ever seeing one before.

They are so beautiful, Sherry! I wonder I have not spotted them in Bayonne. I must keep my eyes peeled. Hope you have been well. So good to get back to blogging with your lovely images. x

Bluebirds seem to prefer semi-open habitats, including cut-over or burned areas, forest clearings, farm country, and open pine woods. Also in suburbs where there are extensive lawns and good nest sites such as bluebird boxes. They wander into other habitats in winter.
I am well thanks. Hope you are too.

I will watch out for them! I have been trying to learn more through the migratory birds who pop into our backyard. They are fascinating. I am well too Sherry. Just got back to blogging and it feels great. 🙂

The photo of the pair is especially fetching. I never see a bluebird without remember my mother, who kept a suncatcher of that popular ‘mad bluebird’ hanging in her window. Your license plate’s nice, too. I’ve been tempted to get one that’s available here with a horny toad on it! I suspect I’ll see quite a few of a new release that’s coming, with a monarch butterfly on it. Like yours, our special plates help to support conservation.

Thank you. I have a blue stained-glass fairywren suncatcher given to me by my mother that I treasure. The special plates don’t cost too much. It is usually half the price to renew one. Plus it makes it easy for me to remember my license plate number.

I will gather up a few to send Deborra for the Linnaean NY field notes as soon as I can. The plate didn’t a lot and will cost half the price to renew it.

So beautiful these Eastern bluebirds, we don’t have them in Belgium. Thanks for sharing 😉
