We needed to take care of dental and prescription tasks so walked up to the Midtown area on March 16th.

The history of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration on 29th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues is fascinating. “The rector of the nearby Church of the Atonement, which is no longer extant, refused to conduct funeral services for an actor named George Holland, suggesting, “I believe there is a little church around the corner where they do that sort of thing.” Joseph Jefferson, a fellow actor who was trying to arrange Holland’s burial, exclaimed, “If that be so, God bless the little church around the corner!” and the church began a longstanding association with the theater.” It is still known and the little church around the corner. The Neo-Gothic style church was built in 1849.

The second church is Calvary Church at 277 Park Avenue South between 21-22 Street. “The Calvary Church parish was founded in 1832, and initially used a wooden-frame church on what was then Fourth Avenue – which has since become Park Avenue – uptown of its current site. That building was moved to the current location in 1842, and the new Renwick-designed Gothic Revival sanctuary was completed in 1848. Renwick patterned Calvary after twin-towered French cathedrals, but, unlike Grace Church, Calvary was constructed of brownstone. The church’s two wooden spires were removed in September 1860 when they became unstable; the octagonal bases remained but eventually deteriorated and were removed in 1929.” I recommend following the link to see the pictures on Wikipedia.

    Beautiful church doors! Love the light that is in your photos. Haven’t forgotten yet your comment of a few weeks ago that you choose the fastest computer. Regretfully, everything over $500- is too much when one lives on social security! Am not complaining, it was my choice to live the life I have lived, here in the USA for a doctorate, so I am okay with an old slow computer.
    How are you doing with this present situation?? Noticed that all your doors are church doors. Hope that the pandemic results in people getting back to God (not necessarily to the church) instead of their Sunday entertainment. Enjoy your weekend.

      Thanks. I went to HP’s website and I see some gamer PCs for around $500 US for sale that would do graphics well. Refurbished computers cost even less. I am not religious though I do believe in a higher power. I photographed the church doors because they are pretty.

        You crack me up, Sherry! You like to research, eh? My reburbished apple was $600 two years ago.That was the cheapest in the store.A specialty store in apples though. Bought it because Word was already on there.

          Apple! They are notoriously overpriced. I use Windows computers. More bang for the buck. No one likes to switch operating systems. Best of luck with your choices.

            I knew you would say that! Have some bad experiences with windows. Had 3, and they all crashed, and the geek squad was not able to recover anything of the hard drive. So, that gets expensive too. Yes, I had Norton security. My problems is that if there’s a virus (lol!) I don’t how, and have not the knowledge what to do about it. Had heard, and hope it’s true, that it’s harder for an Apple to crash … let’s hope so:) Thanks for talking to me Sherry, and appreciate your willingness to help me. Right now, I am preparing to get our house up for sale, so can’t do anything anyway right now, because we might move back to Europe.

    Wonderful photos of places well familiar to me. New York certainly has a wealth of architectural gems, and these are two. Also: you’re reminded me of the Louise Nevelson chapel at St. Peter’s in midtown. Have you seen it? It’s wonderful, in a different way.
