I dug through my folders while house bound and came up with these six plant photographs I would like to show.
In case anyone finds this useful. My filing system for my over 100,000 images starts with folders named by location (USA, World, People, etc.) with sub folders by year. Inside the year folders are dated folders: YYYMMDD and subject. Inside those folders are folders called RAW, TIF, JPG, PSD – as needed. This folder structure works well in Lightroom as I can select by type of file easily. I use file names starting with YYYMMDD subject, and number. I also find files easily searching the added meta data of location and details on the subject. Using the date first in a file name means that files will will sort chronologically in any computer system or app.

Organizing digital photos is so very important, and a mystery to many, so it’s great you shared your system. And the photos are so beautiful, my friend. Each photo sharing the beauty and delicate nature of these flowers. My favorite is the pussy willow, I think it’s superb.

When I started accumulating digital photographs a couple of decades ago I initially sorted them by subject. That began to get cumbersome because a given picture could fit into more than one category. After a while I switched to a system with one top-level folder per year. Inside those I have one folder for each date and place. Finally inside those I sort by description. Most photographers I know use Lightroom, and if I had it to do over I probably would also, but at this stage it would be too tedious to go back and catalog hundreds of thousands of photographs in Lightroom.

If the photographs are cataloged in folders as you describe on your hard drive when you import them into Lightroom they will have the same folder structure. The creation of a catalog based on files on the hard drive is easy to make in Lightroom. Tech support can walk you through it. Thousands will take a time to import. Anything in the file’s metadata will import also. It’s all automatic. I recommend you do it. BTW the screenshot above is a few folders in Lightroom and on my hard drive.

Not at all difficult, you just need to wait while Lightroom does the work. FYI, I teach how to use Lightroom. There are loads of tutorials out there. Google how to import folders into the Lightroom.
