Fort Gansevoort

In front of the door is a triangle in the road that marks the site of an old Native American “castle”, so called because there was a wall around it. The door is at 5 Ninth Avenue, NYC.

A little history: Fort Gansevoort early 19c. and before that Native Americans lived there.

Sorry, my blog had some issues (my comments didn’t stick) last two weeks, but I think I solved it yesterday, so if I haven’t replied, sorry – this was what was going on.
Beautiful weathered look with the bare branches.
I wonder about the following – the name of the fort is “old Dutch” and this is the red brick the Dutch houses used to have (even in my younger years).
Is there a connection somewhere between the Native American and Dutch in previous centuries? (you don’t have to research – only if you know if off hand…)
    Great post, Sherry!

Yes I do know the history and the Dutch word fort. My husband gives the history in his tour. See the 2 new links i posted above. It was a Fort and the home of a Sachem. Thanks Jesh.

I love the vines twining around the doors. I’m excited because I just planted three varieties of annual vines in potting soil/seed starter for this year’s garden. I doubt they’ll grow as exuberantly as the ones you photographed, but I can hope.

Those vines have been there for more than 20 years. Hope you get nice cover in much less time than that.

The name appears to be Dutch for “goose ford.” I see that Peter Gansevoort was the maternal grandfather of Herman Melville.

Ooo, that door needs some love! Must be something when all the vine are blooming.

I’m pretty sure I saw this one the last time I was done there. It’s got that great weathered look to it.
    Nice shots 🙂
