It’s good to be able to remove the out-of-focus leaves that got in the way. We couldn’t have done that in the days of film photography, at least not without a huge amount of hard work.

I agree. It is fabulous being able to remove distractions with all the cloning and duplication tools Photoshop has.

I love the edited version, purely and simply because the Cardinal is the subject and the green leaves and blue/green in the upper left are very distracting.
If I had the editing software and skills, its exactly what I would have done. Must be the artist in us 🙂
More than once I’ve spent 30-40 mins removing all the spots and rubbish in the lake water of a duck image because I find the spots distracting. I also delete odd bright over-exposed leaves and such due to the distraction they cause. No point photographing a beautiful bird and then being left with a very busy image that loses the viewer’s eye. and allows the viewer’s eye to wander aimlessly about the frame 🙂
But that’s just my point of view and it may not suit everyone.

You are exactly right about distracting things in a composition. I am puzzled. Sounds like you do have editing software if you cloned out bright spots. Before I used the other two apps I used Lightroom and Photoshop. Thanks for you compliment.

I only use the basic quick editing ‘tweaks’ of the Apple Macs El Capitaln standard editing tools. Sometimes I erase an odd leaf or spot delete rubbish on the water, or increase the contrast, but my poor short-term memory stopped me learning (and remembering how) to use Lightroom and Photoshop Elements 9. I do have the discs for an old version of Photoshop, but my intermittent Brain Fog makes learning new tasks pretty much impossible these days. Sometimes I crop off 1/8th of an inch on one or more sides. Since I have an art/desgin (and even graphic art) education 45 years ago and painted watercolours among many other creative pursuits over the years, some of it is bound to rub off on my 7 year old photography hobby in retirement.

An artistic eye is more important that developing images. My method to learn is to use Google when I forget how to do something, learn one new trick at a time, then practice it. That way it gets into long term memory.

Unfortunately, I have a health condition that affects short-term memory (and long-term sometimes). I often get embarrassed when talking to someone as i forget what they’re talking about. But you have the right idea in Googling it. I don’t know what I’d do without auto spell-check and Mr Google 🙂

Thanks for your honest opinion. I prefer the warmer tones and the focus on the bird in version 2. If you look closely you will see that there are paint brush strokes in version 2.
