Perhaps to console myself over the lack of a single sale of my Natural Side of the City book, though it has gathered over 100 likes in a week, I bought a bird pin and some feathers and created this accessory for my birding hat. I just love my hot glue gun.

oh I am sorry you haven’t sold one yet. It will happen I am sure as it is a beautiful book. Like the others though it is cost which prevents me. In the meantime though your hat decoration is stunning.

Almost all of us have the same problem. The Internet is enormous, so it’s hard to stand out. I’ve had a presence on Fine Art America for over two years but have sold only two prints and one card.

I know. I have my pictures allover. I have had my photos up for sale since 2009 and only sold twice. This difficulty applies to job hunting too. I can’t find a business that will hire me. I get a few small freelance jobs once in a while.

Hi Sherry, Your bird hat pin is lovely, you gave me the idea to do something great for my bird hat too. I was all set to purchase your book and the website was working, but when I got to the price it was beyond my budget, I’m sorry. Thanks Jet. The pin cost me $9 with the feathers. If I could buy 50 books for $2,500 in advance I could sell them for 25% less but that is still to much. I need capital to invest to print them for less money at a less expensive publisher. I am happy to have an appreciative audience and at least folks can see it.

Your first book, Sherry. Enjoy the feeling. Get 10 printed and sell them in Central Park. Ask stores near the park to present / host your book. Print small flyers and leave them on each seat available in your favorite locations. People might find you, but you can do so much to promote your book. Who are your potential buyers? Me, a blogger in Germany dedicated to landscape photography? May be. May be not. The book is in the category “Fine Art”. Now if I am interested in nature, birds and flowers I will search for “Fine Art”? Create a YouTube video about your work, an Instagram post, a Facebook story about you awesome new book. Twitter all the facts about your book. Google will find you in one of these days. You are competing against millions of other books, images. Take it to the people, get involved. My printed, mobile portfolio created more sales than all the work I did in the Internet. People want to see, fell, smell things. I do. Now all this means just one think. Excellent job, awesome images. Be proud of your work and start showing it to people. It will be a long, frustrating waiting time until they find you. I can’t afford the printed version. Thanks so much for the excellent advice and taking the time to write it. At the moment I can’t afford to buy my own book. I priced it so a sale doesn’t profit me. Blurb prices it high because each print is a one off. To make this book sell I need to be able to afford to order in bulk at a less expensive publisher. I am partially disabled from Lyme and cannot get around like I used to, my spare money is spent on health care. I had an idea to try and interest a publisher with the PDF of my book, even then I would have to pay them to publish. I have posted about the book on all the social media and more except YouTube. I will try to make a video about the book. I am pleased with how the book turned out and my instructors were impressed with it, especially the layout. Thanks for your praise.
As an aside, I used to be an artist (see http://www.sherryfelix.com). At one time I was blacklisted by a colleague. I tried to sell my work freelance without success until I found a gallery willing to take me on. Then I sold to a few other galleries after the black list was lifted. I was starving for a year while blacklisted. So I know about how brutal the gallery scene can be. Example, they sold my work for $5,000 I got 5% or $250 for a month’s work. It eventually burnt me out and I was forced to stop painting, even though I was still selling. I changed my career, went to college and became a cartographer. I am only now getting back into something creative. If I have to fight to sell I won’t because it will kill my creativity. One good thing, my income isn’t dependent on my art any more.

Take heart. Us bloggers can be a cheap bunch of appreciators. No illusions of disenchantment of your impressive work.
Not directly related, but I have sent payment for online materials twice in the past and received …nothing! Simply my fault for not pursuing the fault further.. – and certainly not blaming the specific bloggers. It’s just, the inconvenience of choosing to “buy” and waiting and waiting. If nothing else we certainly do appreciate your postings, and all those we regularly follow. M 🙂

I know I should not be dissapointed. I wasn’t expecting to sell any, price is too high. I secretly hoped anyway. If I had money to invest I could have bought in bulk and maybe sold 1 or 2 at a reasonable price. The PDF is inexpensive. Blurb is a big publishing company, Lightroom supports it in their book module, and they are reliable.
