Grand Manan PO Door

Built in 1938 on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada, when post offices were much more  important. Note the special door that used to be just for telegraphs. Now the post office is a gift shop.

Sherry, Amazing shot of The Old North Head Postoffice. My wife and I purchased it from the Federal Government as our retirement plan which we now enjoy!

The building is here to stay and will maintain its charm. The Government and Telegraph side of the building now hosts Postoffice Pizza, our resurrected skill from my high school days serving hand tossed NY style pizza. Please come back and visit. Our pages can be found at http://www.NorthHeadProperties.com. We can also be found on TripAdvisor and FaceBook.

Regarding the smokestack item in front of the building, it was actually across the street in the Fishermen’s Association yard, but now resides in the field next store. It’s actually a pump for the herring industry. When they seine the weirs around the island, this device is used to vacuum the catch from the nets into the herring carriers found out front at the wharf.

Those were the days! Post offices disappear at an alarming rate and now it’s all ‘do it yourself’. 😦 Lovely old building. At least it’s still there. 🙂

Hope they keep it. Looks like they will. Snail mail isn’t used as much any more.

This photo says so much, Sherry. I really like it a lot, beautiful old building, tall weeds and disarray, Canadian flags. Fantastic.

Fabulous building – what is the metal construction in front?

I love older architecture, so much more interestesting than boring, only what is necessary architecture that is more common today.

What a lovely building! I really like the brickwork and archways.

At first glance of the new photo of you I thought I was looking at my neighbor Tina! I had to stop and look longer. She’s a native New Yorker btw. There is a resemblance! 🙂 Both of you are beautiful ladies.

That’s quite a building and one that on “a dark and stormy night” might look a bit ominous. 🙂

Why is it that when I click on the Comment button a (new to me) photo of you flashes on screen and then disappears and I see no way to retrieve it – other than to click pm the Comment button again?

Nice little piece of history! The now-gift shop door is the one to the left, I assume.

Glad to have memories of the Bay of Fundy revived!

The store occupies most of the building. Both doors I think. The photo is my avatar and non-retrievable. I’ll send you one.
